Baba Marta (Grandma Marta)
March 1, or as the Bulgarian call it Baba Marta (Grandma Marta), is one of the most popular and unique Bulgarian feasts, related to a very special ritual. On this day people give each other a special amulet the so-called martenitsa, wishing each other health, strength, longevity, and fertility all through the coming year. Martenitsa is usually made of two interwoven threads a red one and a white one. In some regions of Bulgaria, the threads are only red, and in others they are in many colors, but the dominant color is the red. In the traditional folk beliefs, the red color symbolizes the power of the sun, which gives energy and life to every being. On the day of the feast, everybody wears martenitsa on their clothes, or around their wrists. They wear the amulets until they see a stork or a tree in bloom.

Each year, Easter is celebrated for three days and is related to may interesting and original rituals and traditions. One of them is the coloring of eggs, which are colored on Holy Thursday after the Divine Liturgy. The first egg is always red. Why? According to one of the legends, Mary Magdalene, which was healed from the bad spirits by Jesus, first saw him after he rose from the dead. She starting traveling around the world telling people about the miracle. When she arrived in Rome, she went to the palace of the emperor Tiberius. At that time people had to bring presents to the emperor, but Mary was very poor, so her gift was an egg. She gave to to Tiberius saying Christ is Risen! The emperor did not believe her and told her How could anyone rise from the dead? This cannot happen, just as this white egg cannot become red. While Tiberius was saying these words, the color of the egg Mary Magdalene was holding started to change into red. Since then, on Easter Christians color eggs in red and greet each other with the words Christ is Risen, to which the answer is Indeed He is Risen!.

On the day preceding the day of St. George the peasants used to plant a beech bough, into leaf, in the middle of their fields, in order to make the wheat grow high and, in general, have rich crops. At the door of each house, beech twigs, blossoming hawthorn, lilac or other bushes in flower were fixed. On St. George's Day the housewives stuck green branches to the fountains and the wells and dropped stalks of nettle in the water cauldrons - for good health. St. George's Day is also the festival of cattle breeders. Traditionally, on this day shepherds would take a lamb, with a wreath on its little horns, to the churchyard. The priest would say a solemn prayer for the health of both humans and animals, and for a rich harvest. It was a custom for each household to have roasted lamb or some other lamb dish on its St. George's Day table. St. Georges Day is also the name day of everyone called George.
