The new radioactive waste repository receives 17 million leva for its completion The Bulgarian government has decided to allocate an additional 17 million leva to the State Enterprise "Radioactive Waste" for the completion of the first phase of the construction of a national repository for low and intermediate radioactive waste near the Kozloduy NPP. The facility must accept old waste from the site near Novi Han and new waste from the operation of our nuclear power plant. The construction of the first phase was to be completed by the end of 2023, after which it must be licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Agency and put into operation. When the site is operational, it must begin to accept low-level radioactive waste, which has so far been stored in the Novi Han repository near Sofia for 60 years. The transfer of old waste to the new repository will take up only a percentage of its volume, as some of it will be greatly reduced in the plasma incineration facility for certain types of low-level radioactive waste. The so-called Plasmatron was put into operation at the end of 2018. and it can reduce the volume of various types of waste by two to 80 times. The construction of a National Repository for Radioactive Waste is an obligation of Bulgaria under Directive 2011/70/EURATOM establishing a Community framework for the responsible and safe management of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste.
