The largest producer of mineral fertilizers in Bulgaria - the company "Agropolychim" is investing in clean production with a new delivery of "blue" ammonia. The ship LPG/C Green Power v.2 delivered a new 5,000 tons of "blue" ammonia from the USA to the port of Varna-West. The quantity will be used for the production of fertilizers with a lower carbon footprint, local media report. The decarbonized fertilizer products will be distributed with priority to farmers applying regenerative agricultural practices on their farms, as well as to those who supply biomass of sustainable origin for the production needs of "Agropolychim" AD, thanks to which the fertilizer producer maintains almost complete energy independence from natural gas. In the meantime, the company calls for an open dialogue on the EU's CBAM mechanism for carbon emissions adjustments, which would put Bulgarian farmers in serious trouble. Thanks to the new supply of "blue" ammonia, Agropolychim AD reduces its carbon footprint by approximately 5,450 tons of CO? emissions - an amount that nature would compensate for only after decades. Despite the positive steps towards decarbonization, the sector faces a serious test - the upcoming introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) from January 1, 2026, Agropolychim comments. According to the mineral fertilizer manufacturer, although the main goal is to level the playing field between EU producers and importers from countries without carbon taxes, the actual implementation of the Mechanism raises a number of questions and concerns. The concerns are that Europe will pay increasingly higher carbon quotas for its production, as well as carbon taxes on imports, which will make European fertilizers some of the most expensive in the world. For countries like Bulgaria, where agriculture is highly export-oriented, this could mean higher production costs, increased prices throughout the chain, and reduced competitiveness in the global grain market.
