The fertilizer producer "Agropolychim" has made a number of innovations and investments in recent years that have a significant environmental impact, but also a very sound business logic and add value to the production. Devno's "Agropolychim" is the first fertilizer producer in Europe, which in 2015 began to produce steam for technological needs by burning biomass, and not wood, but plant waste from agriculture. The installation has two boilers and a capacity of 31 MW, and with its construction, "Agropolychim" almost completely replaced the use of natural gas for heating energy. Every year, over 40 thousand tons of straw supplied by agricultural producers from the region are utilized in the process. Over the past three years, the plant has produced nearly 300 thousand Gcal of steam from biomass, saving over 80 thousand tons of CO equivalent and almost $ 30 million in costs. In addition to reducing emissions, the project also solves another environmental problem - the utilization of plant residues, which would otherwise be burned in the field and would contribute to 9% of total greenhouse gas emissions in Bulgaria, according to Agropolychim. The technology for three-stage use of heat generated during the production of ammonium nitrate is a completely developed technology by Agropolychim engineers. It was introduced in 2023 and allows for the utilization of all energy without a residue, significantly reducing the need for natural gas. The three steps of utilization correspond to the stages of production. This energy efficiency solution is unique and has no analogues in the sector. Thanks to this innovation, the company will avoid approximately 13.5 thousand tons of carbon emissions by utilizing waste heat in the period 2023-2025 alone. Over the past 10 years, the company has reduced its natural gas consumption by over 97% - from almost 300 million cubic meters in 2015 to just 8 million cubic meters in 2024. At the same time, total greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by nearly 95% in 20 years - from 1.2 million tons in 2004 to just 70 thousand tons in 2024. The company switched from using natural gas as a raw material to ammonia. In 2023, the plant took a historic step by making the first commercial delivery in Europe of "blue" ammonia (with captured carbon emissions), produced by the Saudi company Ma'aden. Shortly after, the first "blue" ammonium nitrate was also launched on the market, making the company a pioneer in the EU in offering fertilizers with a low carbon footprint.
