| The textile branch is recovering from the crisis with a 20% growth in orders
The textile industry has managed to recover from the crisis, showed data of the Bulgarian Association of Apparel and Textile Producers and Exporters (BAATPE), made public at the opening of the 9th exhibition Bgate. According to the Deputy Chairman of BAATPE, Bertram Rollman, orders have increased by 18-20% this year. According to NSI (National Statistical Institute) official reports, around 5,400 companies, 90% of these being in the category of small and medium-size businesses, were operating in the textile branch in the first six months of the year. As of July 1, some 113,260 people were directly employed in this sector, accounting for 5% of all employees in Bulgaria and 19.3% of the people employed in the domestic industry. By mid-2010, the manufacturing index of the sector reported a slight decline but orders from abroad came as a surprise in July and August and, due to oversupply, we have a chance to reach the levels of 2007-2008, said BAATPEs Chairwoman Valeria Zhekova. According to her forecast, the next season - the production of the collections for the spring and summer of 2011 - will be successful for domestic companies, and there are indications that consumption in Europe is stirring up. Zhekova pointed out that companies from Italy, Germany, Greece and the Netherlands were major contractors in our country. The increased interest towards Bulgaria is explained by experts with the withdrawal of orders from the Far East and China, mainly because of the expensive US dollar, the faking of fashion brands and the lack of social responsibility in production. Despite the positive outlook and tendencies in the textile and apparel sector, there are some challenges too. It turns out that the biggest problem is restoring production capacities, increasing productivity, and filling the gap between education and businesses. According to Bertram Rollman, there is an overwhelming need of professionals and the branch will need at least 25,000- 30,000 people in the next 12 months. We want all enterprises in our sector to operate properly and for employers to pay the social insurance contributions to workers based on their entire wage, said Mr. Rollman. He added that he hoped that, after two or three years, we will have a sufficient number of well-trained staff in order to be able to satisfy the demand of major brands. Source: Class (17.09.2010) |
