The year is 1834. Dobri Zhelyazkov built the first textile factory in Sliven, which is the first industrial enterprise in the Balkans. This is the first step of the Bulgarian industry. Nowadays,Sliven is still one of the textile centers of the country with its two large companies - E.Miroglio and Decotex. Besides them, however, the city continues to be the center of numerous small tailoring companies that survive despite the crisis. In fact, the city is full of small factories for underwear, socks and all kinds of clothes. Some feel good in their skins, others flee the city. The owner of the small company Affekt Ltd - Radost Dineva claims that not only she has no problems amid the crisis, but even plans to expand the production. The company was established in 1995, specializes in the production of e luxury pajamas and nightgowns. In 2011 it had a turnover of over BGN 300 million. Affekt employs 30 people, no one has been laid-off, says Dineva. However, there are small businesses taht believe that the good times of Sliven textiles are no longer what they were. Jana Pareva, owner of Fashion Dinamics, has already exported the production to Varna and works under a new company name - Pronto Fashion. According to her, there is not enough staff in Sliven, although there is a special school." "In Varna, Dobrich, Shumen and Targovishte are present more tailoring companies, which facilitates us for subcontracting. Tailoring business here is more developed than in Sliven," says Pareva. Overall, however, the image of Sliven is still associated with large textile companies as E.Miroglio and Decotex. They have changed greatly in recent years.
